The objective of MICAT project
Energy efficiency has multiple impacts beyond the reduction of energy consumption alone. Some examples include energy cost savings, emission reductions, better air quality, improved health and wellbeing, resource savings, local economic value and new employment opportunities and increased building values.
MICAT “ Multiple Impacts Calculation Tool“ is an EU funded H2020 project that aims to develop a comprehensive approach to estimate multiple impacts of Energy Efficiency by co-creating a free, easy-to-use, scientifically sound online tool (MICATool). The MICATool will enable holistic analyses of multiple impacts at the European, national and local level to strengthen the climate strategy of the Energy Union and accelerate an affordable and just, sustainable energy transition by addressing the challenges and needs of important target groups: policy makers, practitioners and evaluators. The MICATool will enable policy-makers and practitioners to conduct analyses for different data and policy scenarios, in order to compare and assess the relevance of the multiple impacts of energy efficiency, and strengthen reporting and monitoring at the three governance levels.

Interactive workshops
The MICAT tool will work on three levels, “local, national and EU“, and the goal of each one of them is to upgrade policy planning with multiple impacts of suggested levers. The development of such powerful tool can be done properly only in cooperation with experts, policy makers, representatives of public administrations and institutions, universities and institutes, businesses and civil society. Involving interested stakeholders in the activities of MICATool development will ensure that the results that we are creating are not only credible, but also relevant, legitimate, and useful for further policymaking.
The engagement process will give the developing team feedback on all the developed steps of the MICATool. We foresee three major moment of exchange:
- Step1: Embedding of the analysis in the energy & climate strategy (scenarios/policies) November 21
- Step 2: Analysis of underlying assumptions and methodology of the MICATool – Autumn 22
- Step 3: Implementation of the MICATool & trainings– Summer 23

The prototype of the MICATool can be accessed HERE. This is solely a visualisation of the overall workflow thus neither the methodology, nor the exact values correspond to what the MICATool will deliver. Therefore, this prototype should not be used to assess Multiple Benefits.
